Research Interests

    My research mainly focuses on land-atmosphere feedbacks, the modeling of continental surface processes and hydrometeorology. I spend a good deal of my time working on improving the representation of such processes in terms of the parameterizations for application in meteorological (mesoscale, NWP and GCMs) and hydrology models. I have also spent considerable effort developing and evaluating soil and snowpack processes. Finally, part of my activities include directing PhD students, Post-doctoral researchers and Masters students. If you are interested in working at CNRM, please contact me.

Currently I am spending most of my time running, in particular, 2 projects as the Principal Investigator (PI). The first is: Towards a better understanding of the global hydrological cycle, which is a part of the joint CNES (French Space Agency)-NASA future satellite mission SWOT (Surface Water Ocean Topography) with partners from France, the US, Canada, Japan and Brazil. More information on our current project to support SWOT preparations can be found on the SWOT Project Page at NASA-JPL. The second is the nationally funded by the French National Research Agency or L'Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR) and is entitled Human Imprint on the Land surface Interactions with the Atmosphere over the Iberian Semi-arid Environment (HILIAISE) which is a part of the international project LIAISE which I am co-leading with a team of researchers from France, Spain, the UK and the Netherlands. The project also includes participants from Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic and the USA.

I am also co-PI of the project Global Energy and Water EXchanges (GEWEX) Global Atmosphere System Study (GASS) Initiative (lead by Prof. Y. Xue of UCLA) on the Impact of Initialized Land Temperature and Snowpack on Sub-seasonal to Seasonal Prediction LS4P. At Météo-France, I am co-PI of a CNRS-LEFE project called Impact du contenu en CHaleur du sol et de l'Enthalpie sur la Prévisibilité Sub-saisonnière (Impact of the the soil heat content and enthalpy on seasonal predictability: ICHEPS) as our contribution to this project.


Past

    I have spent considerable time on research and development concerning the ISBA land surface scheme at CNRM. I have also examined the performance of other land surface schemes through various international model intercomparison projects. I worked from 2003-2004 at the Centres d'Etudes Spatiales de la Biosphere (Center for the Study of the Biosphere from Space: CESBIO) in Toulouse. I was at CNRM from 1998-2003, and at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (NASA-GSFC) from 1992-1997, where I was employed by Science Systems and Applications Inc. (SSAI). I attended Florida State University (Masters in meteorology) from 1988-1992, Northern Illinois University (Bachelors in meteorology) from 1987-1988, and the University of Louisville (first 2 years of Bachelors degree) from 1986-1987. I received my PhD in hydrometeorology from Paul Sabatier University in Toulouse, France, (1998-2000) while at CNRM. Finally, I obtained my Habilitation à Diriger les Recherches (HDR) diploma in 2016 from the Institut National Polytechnique Toulouse (INPT) while at CNRM.
